Another World to the C64 gets another preview update!

Sunday, 07 March 2021 by HAS Admin

Another World also known as Out Of This World was released across more than a dozen platforms since its 1991 debut, attaining a cult status among critics and sophisticated gamers alike for its cinematic effects in graphics, sound and cut scenes. Well after the previous big announcement of the game coming to the C64 with a teaser video not long after, we are pleased to tell you, that as of today Eric Majikeyric has shown off another big update for Another World C64!

Just as we said before it is still early days for this game, and we are unlikely to see it ported over any time soon, but compared to the article we did last year, Eric Majikeyric has said in regards to the video above or linked (here). “A lot of work has been made the last few days on Another World C64, the graphics engine has been completely redesigned. Now everything is rendered in a chunky buffer before being converted to bitmap graphics. Polygon blending and masking are now possible“

So yes certainly one to keep an eye as developments progress for the C64, as Another World really is a cult classic!

Saturday, 06 March 2021 by HAS Admin

When it comes to games such as Meat Boy and VVVVV you just know the game is going to be fun but extremely challenging and sometimes frustrating as hell. Well along comes another game to drive you completely insane while remaining fun too, is Erik Rosenlund and team’s upcoming NES game ‘Slow Mole’; a hardcore puzzle platformer with a focus on challenging maneuvers and mind-bending puzzles available to try as a free beta.

Although you can play the free beta today, the full version promises to have more music, extra challenging levels to induce further rage, additional score keeping features, a check point timer, more fixes and finally all of this available as a cartridge version for both the NES and the Famicom. So yes certainly a game worth keeping an eye out for when it gets an eventual release.

Spider Fighter – A new C64 game as a remake of the 1982 Atari 2600 shooter

Saturday, 27 February 2021 by HAS Admin

Waking up just moments ago, we’ve just been told via Facebook, that if you want to play the latest in Atari 2600 remakes on your C64, then you might want to play the C64 action shooter game called ‘Spider Fighter’; A remake of the Atari 2600 game which was originally designed by Larry Miller for the Atari 2600 and published by Activision in 1982. The same designer behind the Atari 2600 racing game Enduro, which was later released in 1983.

According to the wikipedia for Spider Fighter : The object of Spider Fighter is to protect an orchard containing fruit—grapes, strawberries, oranges, and bananas—from four kinds of bugs. They also go on to say, that Digital Press described it as “much like the coin-op game Stratovox but w/o the voice. For those wanting to play the game right now, can do so via the link below.

Parachute – Game and Watch title unofficially released for MS-DOS

Saturday, 20 February 2021 by HAS Admin

Another day and another Game and Watch mention, as the previous one was called ‘Donkey Kong Jr’ which was ported over to multiple commodore systems, and this latest release called ‘Parachute’ has been developed for MS-DOS. Now unlike the other game port developed by alargames and starring Mario, Parachute was a game released in 1981 and has been ported/remade to the MS-DOS by friedpixels.

According to the Wikipedia write up for the game ” Parachute is a Game & Watch game released as a part of the Wide Screen series on June 19, 1981. The player controls a character in a boat and has to prevent parachutists from landing in shark-infested waters. A life is lost every time the player fails to do this. In Game B, the parachutes can get stuck in trees. Parachute was recreated in Game & Watch Gallery for Game Boy, Game & Watch Gallery 2 for Game Boy Color, Game & Watch Gallery 4 for Game Boy Advance and Game & Watch Collection 2 for the Nintendo DS (a Club Nintendo-exclusive)”.

Bagman Comes Back – A homage to Bagman, an arcade game released by Valadon Automation in 1982

Saturday, 20 February 2021 by HAS Admin

We’ve certainly had our fair share of Arcade games mentioned on Indie Retro News this year so far, from Tapper, to Puzzle Bobble, and yes even Space Invaders. But another game has just caught our attention, and that’s LC-Games latest homage to the 1980’s ‘Bagman’ called ‘Bagman Comes Back’; a game that’s available to download through the itch.io website as a version that is made up of 8 completely new stages.

According to the wiki for Bagman, The objective of the game is to maneuver the bagman through various mine shafts, picking up money bags and placing them in a wheelbarrow at the surface of the mine. The player must avoid pursuing guards, moving ore carts, and descending elevators. The player may temporarily stun the guards by striking them with a pickaxe or by dropping money bags on them when they are below the player on the same ladder. The player may move between the three screens which make up the level via shafts and on the surface.

Albert – A high grade platformer released for the ATARI XL/XE

Wednesday, 17 February 2021 by HAS Admin

Those of you looking for some fresh news for the Atari XL/XE have come to the right place, as Saberman has just informed us of a brand new game for the Atari 8bit called ‘Albert’. This game first mentioned via the atarionline website, tells us of a character called Albert that has to traverse many different levels, collect highly sought after gemstones, while also avoiding dangerous enemies such as fast moving wasps!

This game for the Atari XL/XE looks as if it is the next best thing for this 8bit system, as not only are the graphics of high quality, but there’s plenty of animation to be seen, controls are spot on, and the scrolling is smooth. As one person puts it ”  The sprites, scrolling, colours and effects put a lot of 8 bit counterparts to shame. This computer is 42 yrs old! The programmers continue to amaze with what they can get out of this amazing computer. Well done!”
